Combating Marine Wildlife Crime in the Heart of South America

In partnership with local officials, SSL’s Peru campaign involves comprehensive work to improve marine conservation laws and to enhance enforcement against violators. With 1,500 miles of coastline – from Tumbes in the north to Tacna in the south – Peru is home to a dizzying array of marine wildlife, including sea turtles, sharks, rays, sea birds, and over 30 species of cetaceans. This community of life is under attack on a daily basis.Foreign fleets are known to engage in illegal fishing and transshipping operations. In June 2017, SSL kicked off a long-term campaign to work with leading officials in the Peruvian government to combat these problems.
