Preserving Marine Biodiversity in the Western Pacific

In 2015, the Republic of Palau approved the Palau National Marine Sanctuary Act, officially establishing one of the largest no-take marine protected areas on the planet. By converting 80% of its Exclusive Economic Zone into a marine reserve, Palau has offered an inspirational example to a region beset by poachers and pirate fishermen. To ensure that this sanctuary lives up to its name, Sea Shepherd Legal forged an alliance with the government of Palau to enhance the capacity of local prosecutors, regulators, judges, and enforcement personnel. With well-trained authorities, Palau will be able to guarantee that the protections enshrined in law are in turn reflected on the water.
