Protecting Whale Sharks Across the Globe

Whale sharks, like other shark species, are threatened by Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing, as well as bycatch, vessel strikes and inappropriate tourism practices. Despite a population decline of 63% in the Indo-Pacific and 30% in the Atlantic, few whale shark range states have promulgated national legislation for whale shark protection, and all lack sufficient capacity to enforce against and deter IUU fishing. Sea Shepherd Legal is working with the government of the Philippines, the Secretariat for the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species (CMS), and Large Marine Vertebrates Research Institute Philippines (LAMAVE) to enhance protective legal and policy mechanisms for the long-term protection of whale sharks. These efforts will result in broaden protections for many other shark species.
