On September 20, 2018, Sea Shepherd Legal filed suit against the Trump Administration for failing to adhere to mandated processes under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).

This lawsuit is not Sea Shepherd Legal's first legal challenge launched against the Trump Administration, and it will not be the last – if U.S. agencies continue to play fast and loose with the rules.

In this particular case, we requested documents related to Department of Interior´s (DOI) review of certain Marine National Monuments (Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument, the Rose Atoll Marine National Monument, the Marianas Trench Marine National Monument, and the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument). The DOI is considering reducing or otherwise modifying these Monuments, all of which contain important habitat for a multitude of marine species.

Despite the importance of public scrutiny of this ill-informed review, the DOI failed to respond to our FOIA request. We are hopeful that our lawsuit will force the DOI to comply with the clear laws governing public disclosure of government records.
